KMC to provide solar panels, inverters

KMC to provide solar panels, inverters

ARJUN POUDEL
KATHMANDU, Jan 14: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has decided to provide solar panels to its ward offices, as the 11 hours of daily power cut is halting daily administrative work. The problem has been compounded by the fact that all the ward offices in the metropolis are not computerized.

Though ward offices that have their own buildings will be provided solar panels, ward offices that do not have their own buildings will only get inverters.

"We have allocated Rs 125,000 per ward office for the solar panels. It is estimated that a panel purchased with the amount will be sufficient to generate electricity to operate two computers and a printer," Badri Bahadur Khadka, chief of the Administration and Organization Department, said.

The decision to equip the ward offices was taken this week and the actual distribution of equipment will start next week.

The KMC has already decentralized authorities like registration of marriage, death, birth, relation certificates and so on to the ward offices. The offices keep data digitally but in recent month the long power cut brings daily work close to a halt. Things are likely to grow worse as the power cuts are increased.

"Due to power cut in recent month, local people face trouble, and we also got a lot of complaint about delay in service delivery," he added.

The KMC has also decided to recruit more computer operators and will also give training to some of its staff working at the ward offices.

There are 35 ward offices in KMC but in more than nine places KMC runs its offices in rented rooms. Altogether, 26 ward offices will get solar panels, while others will get inverters.

But due to lack of places in the rented rooms to keep solar panels, KMC has decided to provide the inverters.Link

According to Khadka, the KMC is looking for place to build its own offices to house the ward offices in places that already do not have their own facility. The KMC plans to build five ward offices.
